Due west Plains is a city in Howell County, Missouri, U.s.a.. The population was eleven,986 at the 2010 demography. Information technology is the county seat of Howell County.[8]
History [edit]
The history of Due west Plains can be traced back to 1832, when settler Josiah Howell (later whom Howell County is named) created the first settlement in the region known as Howell Valley. Due west Plains was so named because the settlement was on a prairie in a westerly direction from the nearest boondocks, Thomasville.[9]
The Courthouse Foursquare Historic District, Elledge Arcade Buildings, International Shoe Company Building, Mount Zion Lodge Masonic Temple, Due west. J. and Ed Smith Edifice, and West Plains Bank Building are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[x]
The American Civil War [edit]
The location of West Plains led to nearly constant conflict due to the proximity to what was then the border betwixt the Marriage and Confederacy. Due west Plains was largely burned to the basis, and Howell County as a whole was devastated. No major battles occurred in West Plains or Howell County, but much of the devastation came from abiding guerrilla warfare.[11]
Confederate Brigadier General James Haggin McBride gave residents an ultimatum to either join the Confederate army or to flee the expanse. An overwhelming majority of Howell County residents chose to flee, and over ninety% of the population had fled by the fourth dimension the war was over.[12] Many, notwithstanding, as well chose to fight for the Confederacy, as McBride promised to protect his soldiers' property and loved ones. The Great Depression era [edit]

West Plains Dance Hall explosion [edit]
On Apr xiii, 1928,[14] for reasons withal unknown, a violent explosion occurred in downtown West Plains. About 60 people had gathered in the Bond Dance Hall, which was on the second floor of a building on East Main Street. The explosion was reported to exist felt for miles, even in Pomona, which is approximately 10 miles from West Plains. Windows were shattered throughout the block, and cars were also warped on the street. The explosion besides damaged the nearby Howell County Courthouse so badly that it was vacated and left until late 1933, when it was demolished by the Civil Works Administration.[fifteen] Thirty-7 people were killed in the explosion, and 22 people were injured. 20 of those killed were never positively identified, but cached in a mass grave at Oak Backyard Cemetery in the southeast part of town. They are memorialized past the Rock of Ages monument, erected on Oct six, 1929.[16] The explosion has as well been remembered in a folk vocal recorded thirty years later.[17]
The cause of the explosion is nevertheless a topic of controversy nearly a century afterwards the boom. Numerous causes for the explosion accept been offered, but a definitive story has never been proven to be true. The most widely accepted theory is that the explosion somehow originated from leaking gasoline in a garage owned by J. W. Wiser, which happened to be on the floor below. Because Wiser was at the garage at the time, some have speculated that the blast was intentionally caused past Wiser every bit a suicide attempt, which his wife reportedly refused to acknowledge. In addition, the late W Plains native Robert Neathery explained in his 1994 volume, West Plains Equally I Knew It, that a truck containing dynamite parked in the garage may have been the cause, indirectly office of a criminal offense in which someone shot Wiser and set a fire to cover upwardly the criminal offence, and the dynamite exploded.[18]

West Plains Badgers [edit]
In 1936, West Plains gained its ain Small-scale League Baseball team named the West Plains Badgers within the Northeast Arkansas League. West Plains is located at 36°44′xiv″North 91°51′54″W / 36.73722°North 91.86500°W / 36.73722; -91.86500 (36.737355, −91.864991).[23] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total expanse of 13.33 square miles (34.52 kmii), of which xiii.31 foursquare miles (34.47 kmii) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 kmtwo) is water.[24]

2010 census [edit]
As of the demography[4] of 2010, there were 11,986 people, five,001 households, and 3,012 families residing in the city. The population density was 900.5 inhabitants per square mile (347.vii/km2). There were five,509 housing units at an average density of 413.9 per square mile (159.8/km2). The racial makeup of the urban center was 95.04% White, 0.85% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 0.76% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.21% of the population.
There were v,001 households, of which 31.4% had children nether the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female person householder with no hubby present, 4.5% had a male person householder with no wife present, and 39.viii% were non-families. 34.1% of all households were made upward of individuals, and fifteen% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The boilerplate household size was ii.30 and the average family size was two.93.
The median age in the city was 36.7 years. 24.6% of residents were nether the age of 18; 10.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.1% were from 25 to 44; 22.1% were from 45 to 64; and 18.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the metropolis was 45.viii% male and 54.2% female person.
2000 census [edit]
As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 10,866 people, 4,518 households, and 2,909 families residing in the city. The population density was 879.0 people per foursquare mile (339.4/km2). In that location were five,072 housing units at an average density of 410.3 per square mile (158.4/km2). The racial makeup of the urban center was 95.72% White, 0.73% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and ane.31% from 2 or more than races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were i.65% of the population.
There were 4,518 households, out of which 31.i% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% were married couples living together, 12.eight% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The boilerplate household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from xviii to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, at that place were 83.vi males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, at that place were 77.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $24,122, and the median income for a family was $30,369. Males had a median income of $24,705 versus $17,312 for females. The per capita income for the urban center was $15,019. Government [edit]
Westward Plains municipal authorities is based on the mayor–council organization. Co-ordinate to city code, the city council consists of four councilmembers and the mayor, who presides over each meeting. Council members are elected by the city to four-year terms with no term limits.[28] As of Baronial 28, 2012,[29] the mayor of West Plains is Jack Pahlmann, who was previously the mayor pro-tem of West Plains. Pahlmann took the identify of longtime W Plains mayor Joe Paul Evans, who died from centre problems ten days before.[30] On April vii, 2015, Pahlmann was elected equally mayor afterward running unopposed.[31] On April xxx, 2021, Michael Topliff was elected mayor afterwards Pahlmann retired. Preacher Roe Boulevard, named after longtime West Plains resident and sometime baseball role player Preacher Roe, has four lanes to its intersection with U.Due south. 63. The road follows U.South. 63 to Gibson Avenue, where it turns correct crossing Porter Wagoner Boulevard and becoming Missouri Artery, a left onto Concord Road, and a right onto Independence Dr, which becomes Joe Jones Boulevard, subsequently which the route exits urban center limits and carries traffic on a two-lane route toward Alton.
In addition to U.S. Routes 63 and 160, West Plains is also served by Routes 14 and 17 and Routes One thousand, CC, JJ, PP, ZZ, AB, and BB. Many traffic lights in the metropolis were recently upgraded to accept flashing-yellowish arrow signals for left-turning intersections.
One railroad, dated to 1882, passes through town on a BNSF Railway line from Springfield, Missouri to Memphis, Tennessee.

Due west Plains is also served by the Westward Plains Regional Aerodrome, which is located in nearby Pomona, near 10 miles north of the urban center on U.S. 63.
